Phil National Lines, Inc. (PNL), in partnership with Shell Corporation, proudly hosted the Safety and Technical Assurance Group (STAG) 2025 Event last June 26, 2025, at the prestigious Manila Yacht Club. With the theme “Anchored in Safety, Powered by People,” the event served as a timely reminder that behind every regulation, every safety standard, and every vessel — it is people who carry the true responsibility of ensuring safe seas.

The event was attended by representatives from partner organizations, shipping companies, and maritime stakeholders — all sharing the common goal of elevating safety culture and fostering technical excellence across the industry.

The program began with an opening message from the PNL President, who underscored the critical role of industry collaboration and individual accountability in building a stronger safety culture. His remarks set the tone for a day of insightful discussions and knowledge-sharing, reminding all attendees that safety is not solely a matter of rules and equipment — it is a shared commitment, upheld by the choices, discipline, and care of every individual, every day.

Throughout the event, distinguished speakers from various maritime organizations shared valuable knowledge on pressing safety concerns, including man overboard prevention, workforce upskilling, psychological safety, and environmental protection. Discussions highlighted that while policies and procedures serve as a foundation, it is ultimately the awareness, competence, and actions of people that drive safety forward.

A key portion of the program explored the role of continuous learning and development in preparing a future-ready maritime workforce. Speakers emphasized that investment in people — through training, technical advancement, and leadership development — is the most effective safeguard against risks at sea.

Interactive activities engaged participants to reflect on the importance of personal responsibility, reinforcing the idea that “How I respond matters.” From emergencies to day-to-day operations, the safety of the maritime industry is shaped by countless individual decisions, all anchored in awareness, accountability, and care.

As the event drew to a close, updates from Shell’s Maritime Technical Assurance (MTA) program were shared, along with an open Q&A session that allowed attendees to deepen their understanding and raise relevant concerns. The event concluded with the awarding of certificates to the esteemed speakers and participants in recognition of their valuable contributions to promoting safety excellence.

In his closing remarks, Shell's representative expressed appreciation to all partner organizations, attendees, and contributors, highlighting that true progress in maritime safety requires collaboration, accountability, and a shared commitment to continuous improvement.

The STAG 2025 Event stands as a testament to the belief that while vessels may carry cargo and technology may guide operations, it is the hearts, minds, and hands of people that truly steer the course toward safer seas.
